Bengal Gram/Chana Dal Onion Chutney

For roasting

Bengal gram/Chana dal(Kadala parippu)
1 tbsp

Coconut(grated)-1 1/2 tbsp
Onion(chopped)- 1/4 of one
Tomato(chopped)-1 no
Red chillies -1 no/as reqd
Aniseed(Saumph)-A pinch
Cinnamon(Karugapatta) – A small piece
Cloves(Grambu)- 1 no
Cardamom(Elakka)-1 no
Oil-2 tsp oil
Salt-As reqd

For seasoning
Mustard seeds -1/2 tsp
Urad dal(Uzhunnu parippu)- 1/2 tsp
Oil-As reqd
Curry leaves-Few

Procedure

1) For preparing bengal gram/ehana dal/
kadalai parippu/kadale bele onion chut
ney, first heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and fry
Cinnamon, clove, cardamon and aniseed.

2) Add red chilly, chana dal and fry to a
light brown color.

3) Add onion and fry till golden brown. Stir
in chopped tomatoes, salt and saute for
a few minutes.

4) Add grated coconut and fry for 2
minutes.

5)Cool the fried coconut mixture and
grind in a mixie with some water.

6)For seasoning, heat some oil in a pan.
Splutter mustard seeds. Add urad dal,
Curry leaves and pour the grOund chana
dal mix with 1/4 cup of water. Bring to
boil and remove from fire.

7)Bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai
parippu/kadale bele onion chutney is
ready. Serve with idli or dosa.
